Hello! Welcome to our site!! My name is Mara Penny and I'm one of the eight women who represent our new collective, Finch & Foxglove! I live in Oakland, CA, USA with my little family and our furry fleet of black pets.
The ladies in our group thought it would be fun for us to each create our own finch and foxglove artwork and work within the same color palette and share our process in making our pieces. I'm up first!
I like to draw out everything as single icons and then piece the whole thing together into a digital collage. I usually make watercolor washes to add some interest and depth to key pieces in my artwork. This time I focused on the finch. You can see where I used the negative space between the two oranges and the pink to create the marking on the finished bird. I pumped up the pink color a bit to make the color story feel a little more me.
Here's the first iteration with the more rusty orangey colors before I turned up the pink.
After I nailed down the color of the finch I started layering in the flowers... My favorite part!
I went back and forth with using my actual hand-lettering style for my name or my name logo that I've been using for the last year or so. I went with the name logo in the end since so much of my work has it on there already.
I topped it off with some constellations. I use them a lot in my work. For one, I absolutely love them and their meaning but I also think they're the perfect icing on the cake. I like to use the Gemini constellation (because I am a Gemini) and also the constellations for Libra and Leo which represent my kids.
Man alive! I am so sappy... And that's the truth, Ruth!
